What Makes a National Award-Winning Wedding Venue?
When couples search for the “best wedding venue in Essex”, awards can act as a useful shortcut. But what actually sits behind a national award win?
High House Weddings was proudly recognised as the UK's Best Unique Wedding Venue at The Wedding Industry Awards, presented in front of more than 800 industry professionals in Liverpool.
We had the opportunity to sit down with Hayley Clampin, Venue Director at High House, who walked us through what differentiates an award-winning wedding venue in practice, and what couples should look for when choosing where to celebrate.
What does ‘national award-winning’ actually mean in practical terms for couples?
“National recognition is ultimately a reflection of consistency. For couples, that translates into confidence that the experience they are promised during a viewing is the experience they will actually receive on the wedding day itself.
The Wedding Industry Awards are not judged purely on aesthetics, they are heavily influenced by verified couple feedback, operational delivery, service standards and how consistently a venue performs under pressure. Being recognised nationally as the best wedding venue of its kind means couples can trust that the systems, team and overall experience have all been tested at a very high level.
At High House, the focus has always been on creating a seamless experience from first enquiry through to the final dance. The award simply validates the standards the team delivers week after week.”
What were the key factors that led to High House being recognised nationally?
“One of the biggest factors is the variety of experiences High House offers within one exclusive-use wedding venue. Our couples have access to a beautifully restored barn, contemporary orangery, landscaped gardens and luxury on-site accommodation, all designed to work together as part of a flowing wedding journey.
High House allows couples to move through distinct spaces across the day, which naturally changes the atmosphere and energy as the celebration progresses. That flexibility gives weddings a much more immersive feel for both couples and guests.
The other major factor is the team. Beautiful buildings alone do not create award-winning weddings. Consistency, planning expertise, calm delivery, exceptional service and attention to detail are what enhance the experience. The award recognised the complete package rather than any one individual feature.”

How do you ensure consistent quality across every wedding?
“The key is having structured processes without making the experience feel overly rigid. Every wedding is different creatively, but operationally the team works from a very refined framework that has been developed over many years.
That includes detailed planning timelines, supplier coordination, venue preparation standards, staff training and contingency planning. The venue team reviews every wedding in advance so that all departments understand the couple’s priorities and expectations before the day begins.
Award-winning delivery is not about producing one exceptional wedding occasionally. It is about producing excellent weddings consistently, regardless of season, weather conditions or logistical complexity. That consistency only comes from preparation and experience.”
How does the venue design and layout enhance the guest experience?
“The layout of a wedding venue has a huge influence on how a day feels emotionally and socially. At High House, the spaces are designed to create natural progression throughout the celebration.
Guests might start the day with drinks in the Stable Bar Courtyard after crossing the Monet-inspired bridge, before making their way into the beautifully restored barn for the ceremony. From there, celebrations naturally flow into the light-filled orangery for dining and the evening reception, with the beautifully landscaped gardens continuing to provide a beautiful backdrop throughout the day before continuing into the on-site accommodation to round off the experience. Each space creates a slightly different atmosphere, which keeps the day dynamic and engaging.
The balance between indoor and outdoor spaces is also incredibly important in the UK climate. Couples want the flexibility of outdoor ceremonies and garden experiences, while also knowing the venue works beautifully year-round regardless of weather. The venue’s adaptability allows the experience to feel intentional in every season rather than compromised by conditions.”
What role does the team play in delivering an award-winning experience?
“The team is absolutely central to the experience at High House. Weddings are emotional, high-pressure occasions and couples need to feel supported by people who are calm, experienced and genuinely invested in the success of the day.
One of the most valuable things an experienced venue team can offer is perspective. Couples often arrive with exciting ideas but may not always realise where opportunities exist to improve flow, enhance guest experience or create moments with greater impact. A knowledgeable team can take those plans and elevate them in ways couples may not have initially considered, to create their dream wedding.
The best feedback we received at High House is often about how relaxed couples felt on the day itself. That usually means the team has done its job properly behind the scenes.”

What feedback do you consistently hear from couples after their wedding?
“The most consistent feedback centres around how effortless the experience felt from the couple’s perspective. Couples regularly comment on how smoothly the day flowed and how supported they felt throughout the planning process.
Another recurring theme is the professionalism of the team. Couples often say they were able to properly enjoy the day because they trusted the venue team to manage the logistics, timings and coordination behind the scenes.”
How do you balance flexibility with maintaining high standards?
“The balance comes from what could be described as curated flexibility. Couples absolutely want their wedding to feel personal and reflective of them, but they also benefit from a framework that has been proven to work operationally.
At High House, the approach is to provide significant creative flexibility within a structure designed to protect the overall guest experience and quality of delivery. That means couples can personalise styling, entertainment and elements of the day while still benefiting from timelines, supplier guidance and operational expertise that ensure everything runs smoothly.
In many ways, high standards create more freedom because couples can relax knowing the foundations are already secure.”
What advice would you give couples searching for the best wedding venue in Essex?
“Couples should look beyond appearance alone and focus on how a venue actually operates. Beautiful photography is important, but it does not necessarily reflect the experience of planning and delivering a wedding day successfully.
It is worth paying close attention to how a venue communicates, how experienced the team appears, how flexible the spaces are and whether the venue feels equally strong logistically as it does visually.
A viewing, whether virtual or in-person, should also help couples imagine how guests will move through the day. The best wedding venues in the UK create atmosphere, momentum and ease naturally rather than requiring constant intervention or compromise.
Ultimately, couples should choose a venue they trust completely. That trust allows them to enjoy the engagement period properly and be fully present on the wedding day itself.”
